Labeling
In addition to the rules relating to the names (milk / infant formula and milk / follow-on formula) and the list of ingredients, the labeling of products intended for infants must follow some indications, including:
report a statement relating to the superiority of breastfeeding (so that it remains well impressed in the minds of consumers that infant formula cannot be considered a substitute for maternal milk which, when possible, remains the most important choice for the good health of the child),
Report a statement recommending to use the product only on the advice of qualified persons (the choice of the most suitable type of milk for each infant is the sole responsibility of the pediatrician),
It is forbidden to provide indications that discourage breastfeeding,
It is "forbidden to use the terms" maternized "and" humanized "while the term" adapted "is allowed (the first two are considered misleading, because they can lead to think that breast milk is equivalent to formula).
It is forbidden to include in the labeling images of infants or other figures that lead to an idealization of the product.
Commercial break
The advertising of infant formula can only be done through specialist publications in childcare and scientific publications. Advertising in points is not allowed
sales (pharmacies), nor the distribution of free samples to the consumer. These restrictions have the objective of safeguarding as much as possible natural breastfeeding, avoiding the thesis that artificial breastfeeding is superior or equivalent to breastfeeding in some way. The legislator therefore wanted to discourage the "self-service" use of this product as much as possible.
Supplementary health care
Supplementary health care is provided, with the prescription of breast milk substitutes, in the cases of children born to HIV-positive mothers. These products have a particularly high cost, a heavy burden especially for those women who have or have had at shoulders problems of this nature.
