The term Galenic derives from the name of Claudius Galen, physician of ancient Greece who at the turn of the second and third centuries AD used numerous medicinal herbs or their extracts as drugs.
Unlike what happened until a couple of centuries ago, today most of the galenic preparations are on the market ready for use, and as such they are appreciated for their practicality and for the rigorous quality controls to which they are subjected. Rather marginal they are instead the galenic preparations produced by the pharmacist on the recommendation of the attending physician; in this case we speak of magisterial galenic preparations; when instead the pharmacist produces these medicines in his own workshop following the formulas provided for by the official pharmacopoeia, and marketing them with the same name, we speak Galenic officinal preparations Today, however, we tend to attribute the term galenic only to preparations made directly by the pharmacist according to medical prescription (galenic prescription).

Officinal galenics or officinal formulas: medicines prepared in pharmacies according to the indications of the European Pharmacopoeia or the Official Pharmacopoeia of the Italian Republic, intended to be supplied directly to patients. Depending on the type of substances present in the formulation, officinal galenic preparations - as well as industrial medicines - can be dispensed with or without a medical prescription.
Magistral Galenics or Magisterial Formulas: medicines prepared on the basis of a medical prescription intended for a specific subject.
