To carry out its therapeutic action on the heart and blood vessels, nifedipine must be taken orally. However, there are also nifedipine-based medicines for topical use, naturally having different therapeutic indications.

Nifedipine-based medicines can be dispensed in pharmacies upon presentation of a repeatable medical prescription (RR); some of them are classified as class A drugs and their cost can therefore be reimbursed by the National Health System (SSN); others, on the other hand, are classified as class C drugs, therefore fully borne by the citizen.
