Precautions
Below are the links to in-depth articles that talk about drugs for weight loss, in the hope that they will help raise awareness of the sometimes very serious side effects of these dangerous - but hainoi widespread - weight loss drugs.
It should not be forgotten that the medium-long term efficacy of these medicines is often limited: once the intake is stopped, the lost weight is recovered within a few months, often with a lot of interest.
The current legislation in Italy recognizes - as adjuvants for weight loss - only two active ingredients: sibutramine and "orlistat (tetra-hydro-lipostatin), both authorized by the Ministry of Health. This does not mean, however, that these drugs for weight loss should only be used in selected cases.
On January 24, 2010, sibutramine was again banned from the Italian market, as the potential risks deriving from its intake would outweigh the possible benefits.
In 2015, the European Medicines Agency approved the use of two new "anti-obesity" drugs to promote weight management in adult patients.
The two drugs - respectively based on the active ingredients naltrexone and bupropion (Mysimba ®) and liraglutide (Saxenda ®) - act at the level of the brain centers that control satiety, reducing appetite and the amount of food consumed by patients.
Mysimba ® is available as extended-release tablets for oral intake, while Saxenda ® requires subcutaneous injection in the thigh, upper arm or abdomen.
