Octreotide is a peptide whose structure is similar to that of somatostatin, a hormone that is produced by the hypothalamus, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. It was synthesized in 1979 by chemist Wilfried Bauer and was then marketed under the name Sandostatin ®.
