This first step lasts from 6 to 12 weeks; the main objective is to restore the patient to the conditions prior to the onset of the disease. The antidepressant treatment is not an immediately effective treatment, in fact it takes a few weeks for the effect of the drug to be evident. In principle, a slight improvement may be encountered after about a couple of weeks from the beginning of the drug administration, for then achieve consolidation in the following weeks. What is meant by "treatment resistant depression"?

How to treat drug resistance?

Finally, the last strategy used to treat drug resistance concerns potentiation. Again it involves using multiple drugs. In this case, together with the prescribed antidepressant, another drug is used in combination which is not necessarily another antidepressant. The purpose of this association is to enhance the effect of the antidepressant. The advantage of this choice is given by the possibility for the patient to continue using the initial drug. As for the possible disadvantages, there is once again the possible drug interactions between drugs and there is little indication of long-term treatment.
