What is Arnica
Arnica, also called fall grass or mountain tobacco, is a perennial rhizomatous herbaceous plant belonging to the Composite family (Asteraceae)
The rhizome is a horizontal underground stem, often rich in reserve nutrients and equipped with roots at the bottom and stems at the top.
The rhizome, together with the flowers and roots, represents the part of the plant traditionally used in folk medicine and in phytotherapy.
Arnica is classically used as a topical anti-inflammatory and as an anti-muscle fatigue remedy in sports.

Why is Arnica used? What is it used for?
The traditional and phytotherapeutic use of Arnica is mostly linked to its potential analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect.
This activity would be related to the presence, in the rhizome, in the flowers and in the roots, of sequiterpenes, capable, at least in vitro, of turning off the activation of genes involved in the onset of the inflammatory process.
Properties and Effectiveness
What benefits has Arnica shown during the studies?
Clinical studies regarding the use of Arnica as a homeopathic remedy agree that this type of remedy is ineffective.
Some evidence, however, would suggest the usefulness of the topical application of Arnica as an effective anti-inflammatory remedy against trauma and bruises.
Dosage and method of use
How to use Arnica
Arnica is usually applied topically in the form of tinctures, creams, ointments and gels.
This method of use involves the use of tincture diluted 1: 5 in water or alcohol, to be applied by compress.
The external application of the dye must only take place on intact skin.
Some substances contained in Arnica have in fact toxic properties, which prevent their use on sores, abrasions, varicose ulcers and open wounds; during applications, contact with eyes, mouth and genital organs should also be avoided.
Arnica gel
With arnica montana and thyme oil, this topical gel with a high arnica content is specific for muscles, tendons and joints.
Colorless and odorless, it contains 90% Arnica extracts and, thanks to the officinal waters patent, the first component of the gel is the extract in water of arnica flowers, which acts in synergy with the glycolic extracts and the mother tincture of arnica . Thanks to the essential oil of Peppermint, then, it gives a sense of freshness and relaxation. It also contains essential oil extracts of Thyme and Sage.
For a correct use, it is sufficient to apply the gel on the affected part in a circular motion, repeat 2-3 times and leave a veil of 1-2 mm.
Arnica in cream
Present both as a titrated dry extract and as a concentrated aqueous extract, the action of Arnica in this cream is strengthened thanks to the presence of essential oil of carnation and essential oil of cinnamon, both excellent for relieving the discomfort caused by trauma.
Arnica is a valid aid for physical well-being, especially for limbs that are very often subjected to various types of trauma: it is in fact able to transfer its solar energy charge to the skin, giving relief to the body and vitality to the skin.
Side effects
The accidental ingestion of Arnica could cause the onset of gastro-enteric side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and crampy abdominal pain, as well as serious neurological reactions such as coma.
Topical use, on the other hand, could sometimes be followed by the appearance of allergic-like manifestations, such as rhinitis, conjunctivitis, urticaria, bronchospasm, asthma and anaphylaxis.
Cases of erythema and contact dermatitis are also reported in the literature.
Contraindications
When should Arnica not be used?
The oral use of Arnica is strongly contraindicated.
Remember to also avoid the topical use of Arnica extracts in case of hypersensitivity to the plant or to other plants belonging to the same family, such as chamomile.
The contraindications to the use of this plant and its extracts also extend to pregnancy and the subsequent period of breastfeeding.
