BIOMAG ® is a Cimetidine-based drug.
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Antireflux - Antiulcer - H2 receptor antagonists
Indications BIOMAG ® Cimetidine
BIOMAG ® is useful in the treatment of all those morbid conditions associated with gastric hyperacidity, for which a reduction in the acid content of the stomach is required.
Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, esophagitis, duodenitis and gastritis are some examples for which therapy with BIOMAG ® is more suitable
Mechanism of action BIOMAG ® Cimetidine
The oral intake of BIOMAG ® allows the cimetidine contained in the medicine to be rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, guaranteeing the achievement of maximum plasma concentrations in just 60-90 minutes.
Once absorbed systemically, this active principle binds the receptors for histamine H2 secreted by the parietal cells of the gastric glands, antagonizing them and thus reducing the acid secretion of the stomach.
In this way the therapeutic role of BIOMAG ® is effectively carried out, guaranteeing a reduction in stomach acidity - both in basal conditions and after the ingestion of meals - which lasts for at least hours.
Once its activity is terminated, cimetidine, following a hepatic metabolism, is eliminated mainly through the renal filter.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
1. CIMETHIDINE AND ANTI-CANCER ROLE
Int J Mol Med. 2011 Feb 14. doi: 10.3892 / ijmm.2011.618
Cimetidine inhibits the adhesion of gastric cancer cells expressing high levels of sialyl Lewis x in human vascular endothelial cells by blocking E-selectin expression.
Liu FR, Jiang CG, Li YS, Li JB, Li F.
Cimetidine has made headlines in recent years for its demonstrated ability to improve the survival of colorectal cancer patients, probably through the inhibition of the meta-statization process. In vitro studies have shown, in fact, that cimetidine can reduce the expression of adhesion molecules on the surface of endothelial cells, thus inhibiting the contact and subsequent passage of tumor cells.
2. CIMETHIDINE AND ALCOHOL METABOLISM
Pharm Sci Eur J. 2011 Feb 14.
Pol Merkur Lekarski. 2008 Dec; 25: 531-3.
Effects of H2-blockers on alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity
Jelski W, Orywal K, Szmitkowski M.
This interesting study shows how the intake of H2 histamine receptor antagonists, such as cimetidine, can cause a reduction in the functionality of gastric alcohol dehydrogenase, significantly reducing the metabolism of this compound. In fact, higher blood alcohol levels were found in patients who had used these medicines
3. ANTIOXIDANT ROLE OF CIMETIDINE
J Pharm Pharmacol. 2002 Dec; 54: 1681-6.
Cimetidine: antioxidant and metal-binding properties.
Lambat Z, Limson JL, Daya S.
In addition to the important anti-ulcer action, now documented by many and dated studies, cimetidine has proved to be particularly useful, also in countering oxidative stress, known to aggravate the health conditions of patients suffering from various pathologies. More precisely, this active ingredient is it has been shown to be capable of chelating heavy metals, making them unavailable for the production of free radicals.
Method of use and dosage
BIOMAG ® ® 200, 400 and 800mg tablets of cimetidine:
the therapeutic treatment for the various pathological manifestations, for which BIOMAG ® is indicated, should foresee initial dosages of about 800 mg per day, to possibly increase them in case of reduced therapeutic efficacy.
The treatment should be prolonged for at least 4 weeks, even in case of disappearance of the symptoms, and never exceed the maximum dosage of 2 grams per day.
In any case, medical supervision is strictly necessary, so that the chosen dosage and its timing can perfectly adapt to the patient's needs in relation to his physio-pathological picture.
BIOMAG ® Cimetidine warnings
Hepatic metabolism and subsequent renal filtration, which cimetidine undergoes, require close medical monitoring when BIOMAG ® is administered to patients with impaired hepatic or renal function.
Furthermore, the ability of the active ingredient to mask some of the most important symptoms in the course of gastrointestinal pathologies, even severe ones, could delay the moment of diagnosis, making the subsequent therapeutic approach ineffective.
To avoid this unpleasant inconvenience, it would be preferable, before starting to take this medicine, to carry out a careful check-up of the patient's clinical situation.
Headache, lightheadedness, somnolence, vertigo and dizziness described after taking BIOMAG ® could make the use of machinery and driving of vehicles dangerous.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
The use of BIOMAG ® during pregnancy or the subsequent lactation period should be limited only to cases of real need, and under strict medical supervision.
The various experimental data, which show the ability of the active ingredient to cross both the placental filter and be excreted in breast milk, and the absence of clinical trials on pregnant women, does not allow to clearly establish the safety profile of this drug. , significantly limiting its use.
Interactions
The cimetidine contained in BIOMAG ® is able to determine a marked inhibition of the oxidative enzymes belonging to the cytochrome p450 family, involved in the front line in the metabolism of many drugs.
This interaction could therefore lead to a change in the pharmacokinetic properties of different active ingredients such as warfarin, theophylline, phenitorin, beta blockers and diazepam, enhancing their possible side effects.
In light of this evidence, it would be useful to adjust the dosage of the aforementioned drugs, in order to avoid unpleasant adverse reactions.
On the contrary, the concomitant intake of antacids could reduce the absorption of cimetidine, limiting its therapeutic efficacy.
Contraindications BIOMAG ® Cimetidine
BIOMAG ® is contraindicated in patients with already known hypersensitivity to cimetidine or to one of its excipients.
Undesirable Effects - Side Effects
The administration of BIOMAG ® was accompanied, particularly in some patients at risk, by the appearance of various side effects, some of which are clinically relevant.
Fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, changes in heart rhythm, decreased liver and kidney function, dizziness and headache are some of the most observed manifestations.
Fortunately, all the aforementioned symptoms returned promptly following the suspension of therapy.
