More precisely, it is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker that can be used - at the appropriate concentrations and in suitable pharmaceutical forms - for the treatment of different types of eye diseases characterized by ocular hypertension and for the treatment of angina pectoris, hypertension and other pathologies.
Therefore, it can be found in medicines both suitable for oral administration (tablets) and suitable for ocular administration (eye drops and ophthalmic gels). In order to be dispensed, medicines containing timolol require a suitable medical prescription; many of them, however, are classified as class A drugs, therefore their cost can be reimbursed by the National Health System (NHS); some, however, are classified as class C drugs, therefore their cost is fully borne by the citizen .
To tell the truth, timolol is present in numerous medicines also in association with other active ingredients; however, the characteristics of timolol alone will be considered in the course of the article.
